i. Original
Is what it is until it isn’t.
ii. Cassius Version
A month ago, our cat died suddenly and it was devastating. Cassius would often sit in my lap while I work on tracks; snoozing along happily to the more glacial pads and pulses of sub bass, but waking up and wandering off when I brought in kicks and percussion. Not seeming annoyed, just not interested in being woken up.
The second version of ‘Is’ is my attempt to re-work the track into a form that he could have enjoyed for its duration. It features a field recording taken during a long walk the day after he died. The recording is of grey herons building their nests by the river near our house, but also captures conversations we had with passing strangers. RIP Cassius.

A transition between two poles. The first thought of whilst swimming. The second originally more submerged, but inspired into abrasion after early hours dancing to Sandwell District at Strange Brew last spring.
Coaxing motion out of melancholy. Hardness minus machismo. An escape from a retreat.
